Chain tension is necessary so that it does not sag and jump off the sprockets of the camshafts. The hydraulic tensioner of the timing chain is a hydraulic cylinder filled with working fluid. The working fluid under pressure presses on the tensioner piston, which moves the tensioner rod and thereby tightens the chain.
Hydraulic tensioners of the timing chain are of two main types:
